__SALUTATION__
Happy May AD11! I hope this message finds you well and that you are enjoying the beautiful spring weather. May is such a special month for us - not only do we get to celebrate the incredible mothers and maternal figures in our lives, but it's also Military Appreciation Month and Bike Month. Whether you're planning a family gathering, thanking a veteran, or simply enjoying a leisurely bike ride through our district, there's a lot to be grateful for and to enjoy this month. I'm looking forward to sharing some exciting updates with you all. Let's make this May memorable!
As always, thank you for your ongoing trust and support.
In this update, you'll find the following:
Whether it's my District Office or my Capitol office, my door is always open for the people of the 11th Assembly District.
Warm regards,
Lori D. Wilson
Assemblywoman, District 11
LEGISLATION
This year, I introduced 20 bills. Here are three of my top priority bills.
AB 2229 - Menstrual Health Education
Requires that students, once in middle school and once in high school, under the California Healthy Youth Act, be instructed on the menstrual cycle, premenstrual syndrome and pain management, menstrual hygiene management, menstrual disorders, menstrual irregularities, menopause, menstrual stigma, and any other relevant topics related to the menstrual cycle. This bill is sponsored by the SCC Reproductive Health Club.
Passed out of the Assembly Education Committee 4/3 - Currently: In Appropriations
AB 2300 - IV Bags & Tubing
This bill would prohibit any individual or entity from manufacturing, selling, or distributing intravenous solution containers within California that contain intentionally added DEHP, and it would prevent the substitution of DEHP in revised or new products with other specified ortho-phthalates. Research indicates that phthalates are endocrine disruptors, and exposure to these chemicals has been associated with several adverse health effects, including breast cancer, developmental problems, reduced fertility, obesity, and asthma.
Passed out of the Health Committee & Environmental Safety & Toxic Materials Committee 4/3 - Currently: Heading to the Assembly Floor
AB 2319 - Black Maternal Health
This bill aims to reduce the disproportionate maternal mortality rate of Black women and other pregnant persons of color. AB 2319 will enact needed reforms to the California Dignity in Pregnancy and Childbirth Act recommended by a 2021 DOJ investigation to address the continued racial disparity in maternal morbidity rates. This bill is also a California Legislative Women's Caucus priority.
Passed out of the Assembly Health Committee 4/3 - Currently: In Appropriations
MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH
During Military Appreciation Month, I honor the deep commitment of military families, including my own. With both my husband and son having served, I know the sacrifices and resilience required. Representing a district with Travis Air Force Base, a critical asset for our national security and local community, reminds us daily of the bravery that strengthens our district and nation.
MAY IS BIKE MONTH
May is a special time for Solano County and cycling enthusiasts alike, as we celebrate Bike to Wherever Days. This event embodies the spirit of active transportation, encouraging everyone to choose their bikes for commuting, errands, or leisure, and it aligns with our broader goals of health and sustainability. During Bike Month, we not only promote cycling but also emphasize safety. Families are encouraged to always wear helmets, check their bikes regularly for maintenance needs, and follow traffic rules to ensure safety for all road users. With various community events and activities planned throughout the county, including Bike to School Day and community bike rides, there's an opportunity for everyone to get involved and experience the joys of cycling. For more details, visit the Solano Mobility's Bike to Wherever Days page.
SUISUN PRIDE
Join us in making HISTORY at Suisun City's inaugural Pride Event Sunday, June 2, from 12 - 5 p.m.! VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Contra Costa Health with support from FEMA, is planning a full-scale exercise on Wednesday, June 12 and Thursday, June 13, 2024. During the exercise, an incident will involve a chemical exposure to a large group of people causing a surge in the medical system with patient movement at local hospitals. In order to exercise properly, they are actively seeking Adult and Pediatric (Children/Teen) Volunteers. Volunteers are needed for both days, however, you may select the day and location that works best for you.
AROUND THE CAPITOL
Caltrans Workers' Memorial and Worker Safety
As Chair of Transportation, I spoke at the Caltrans Workers' Memorial. Surrounded by our fallen heroes' family, friends, and colleagues, each name on a cone brought home the true cost of their work. Among them was a cone for my former classmate, Ali Shabazz, whose vibrant life was lost while serving our community. His memory, along with the others we honored, deepens my commitment to our ongoing fight for better safety standards. We must and will do better. Their names, their stories, and their families deserve our highest efforts. Let's work together to ensure a safer tomorrow.
SB 233 Press Conference
Following Arizona's announcement of a total abortion ban, I stood alongside my colleagues in the California Legislative Women's Caucus today to support SB 233. This vital bill ensures that California continues to be a beacon of reproductive freedom, offering essential support to Arizona providers and ensuring the protection of reproductive care access.
National Council of Negro Women
I was honored to recognize the significant impact of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) on the Assembly floor. Founded in 1935 by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune and led by Dr. Dorothy Height for over fifty years, the NCNW is a beacon of empowerment for women of African descent. This "organization of organizations" connects more than 2 million women and men across 330 campus and community-based sections and 33 national women's organizations. Their programs focus on vital areas such as education, economic empowerment, health equity, and social justice, profoundly shaping communities and advancing opportunities for African American women.
AROUND CALIFORNIA
State of Black California
I had a fantastic time at UCLA attending the State of Black California event, organized by the Bunche Center. The conference was an enlightening experience, filled with insightful discussions on progress and equality that left me motivated. The event showcased the Bunche Center's dedication to producing quality, community-driven research that informs policy changes, ultimately bridging the gap between academic scholarship and sociopolitical action.
IN THE DISTRICT
AD11 at Dixon City Hall
My team and I had a great time at AD11 @ Dixon City Hall! It was a pleasure connecting with city leaders and constituents. We're already looking forward to our next gathering, which will be held in Vacaville at City Hall on Tuesday, July 16 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Additionally, staff from my office will be onsite throughout the day to assist you or someone you know with state-related matters. Whether it's consumer complaints, unemployment/disability insurance through EDD, Department of Motor Vehicles, or much more. Contact Tish for an appointment @ the Vacaville City Hall event!
Walk MS: Walnut Creek
Last month, #TeamWilson aka my superstar husband and the wonderful Ashley by his side, hit the paths at Heather Farm Park for Walk MS: Walnut Creek. They joined forces to step up in the fight against multiple sclerosis, turning every step into a statement of hope and support. So proud of their commitment and energy! I sadly could not attend since I was in Los Angeles for the State of Black California at UCLA. Teamwork makes the dream work!
Earth Day Clean-up
#TeamWilson had a productive day at the Fairfield Lower Ledgewood Creek Clean-Up! A big thank you to the Fairfield-Suisun Sewer District for putting on this event! I'd also like to thank Suisun City PAL for passing out seedlings to the volunteers! Slowly but surely we are helping make our community a cleaner, greener place. Together, we're making a difference!
