Assemblymember Frazier’s Bill Adding Legislative Oversight to High-Speed Rail Authority Signed by Governor
Sacramento, CA –Yesterday, Governor Jerry Brown signed AB 1813 by Assemblymember Frazier (D – Oakley), which adds two ex officio members – one from the Assembly and one from the Senate – to the High-Speed Rail Authority (Authority) Board of Directors.
“I applaud the Governor for signing AB 1813, which will create consistent oversight regarding the development of high-speed rail and allow for more direct communication between the Authority and the Legislature,” stated Frazier. “The State of California and its voters have committed billions of dollars to this project and it’s the Legislature’s duty to provide oversight and ensure the effective use of public funds.”
California’s voters approved Proposition 1A in 2008 to provide $9.95 billion in General Obligation bonds for the development of a high-speed rail system to connect San Francisco and Los Angeles. The Authority’s Board of Directors provides oversight of the planning, design and construction of the high-speed rail system.
“The Association for California High Speed Trains (ACHST) thanks Assemblymember Frazier for carrying such an important piece of legislation and applauds Governor Brown for signing AB 1813,” said Keith Dunn, Executive Director of ACHST. “High Speed Rail is a transformational project which will modernize California’s rail system, allowing California’s most important resource, our citizens to travel more efficiently while helping us meet our environmental goals and providing good paying jobs. ACHST recognizes that oversight of a large infrastructure project is important and today’s signing of AB 1813 is another positive step in that direction.”
AB 1813 received widespread bipartisan support in the legislature and will become effective on January 1, 2017.
Assemblymember Frazier represents the 11th Assembly District, which includes the communities of Antioch, Bethel Island, Birds Landing, Brentwood, Byron, Collinsville, Discovery Bay, Fairfield, Isleton, Knightsen, Locke, Oakley, Pittsburg (partial), Rio Vista, Suisun City, Travis AFB, Vacaville and Walnut Grove.
