SACRAMENTO – A California legislator is hosting a town hall in Riverside the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 5 for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities and their families and caretakers to share their experiences about the challenges they face and what the state can do to better service the community.
Staff from the office of Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside), will join Assemblymember Jim Frazier (D-Discovery Bay), who chairs the Assembly Select Committee on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, at the town hall, scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5 at the Riverside County Board of Supervisors Chambers, 4080 Lemon Street, in Riverside.
There are an estimated 64,000 individuals who have an intellectual or developmental disability in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
The town hall is free and open to the public. Those with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD), their family members and those who care for them are encouraged to attend.
“This town hall will serve as a listening session,” Frazier said. “We want to hear directly from members of the IDD community about your struggles, success stories, interactions with the Regional Centers, unmet needs…anything you want to share with us. We will open with presentations from the Inland Regional Center and Riverside County Department of Education, but most of the hearing will be devoted to public comment from self-advocates and anybody who wants to speak to us.”
This is the third in a series of hearings and town halls Frazier plans to hold in cities around California over the next year to reach members of the IDD community where they live. Previous hearings this fall in Fresno and Concord drew large crowds.
“Not everybody can travel to Sacramento to participate in hearings at the Capitol,” said Frazier, who has made advocating for the IDD community one of his top priorities since becoming a member of the Assembly in 2012. “These hearings help us learn what we can do in the Legislature to improve the lives of those with an IDD and their families and caretakers.”
Assemblymember Frazier represents the 11th Assembly District, which includes the communities of Antioch, Bethel Island, Birds Landing, Brentwood, Byron, Collinsville, Discovery Bay, Fairfield, Isleton, Knightsen, Locke, Oakley, Pittsburg (partial), Rio Vista, Suisun City, Travis AFB, Vacaville and Walnut Grove.
