SACRAMENTO, CA – Assemblywoman Lori D. Wilson issued the following statement on Governor Newsom’s May Revision of the 2024-25 budget:
"As we review the Governor's May Revision of the budget, it is reassuring to see a committed effort to safeguard core social services, which remain vital for our community's well-being. This proactive approach ensures that the most vulnerable Californians continue to receive necessary support even amid fiscal adjustments.
In the realm of transportation, I am grateful to Governor Newsom for maintaining the previously committed funding levels for public transit, which is crucial for ensuring that this essential service continues to operate. This support allows local agencies to leverage federal funds for critical projects that expand our transit network. However, I am concerned about the reductions in active transportation funding, which may hinder our progress toward supporting all modes of transportation and ensuring safe alternatives to car travel. I am hopeful that we can work towards reducing the proposed total cut of $500 million in the budget year by at least half. It’s important to retain sufficient state funding for transformative Active Transportation Program (ATP) projects, including complete street elements like bike lanes and sidewalks. Additionally, grade separations are vital safety projects in high-traffic areas, and I urge the state to assist local agencies in identifying and applying for federal funds for these projects.
These are indeed serious times requiring serious and thoughtful governance. I am optimistic that through diligent problem-solving and unwavering advocacy, we can achieve outcomes that uphold the priorities of our district and contribute positively to the broader objectives of our state."
