SACRAMENTO, CA – Assemblywoman Lori D. Wilson (D-Suisun City) proudly announces that Governor Gavin Newsom has signed AB 2300, the Toxic-Free Medical Devices Act, into law. This groundbreaking legislation will phase out the use of Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) in intravenous (IV) bags and tubing, ensuring safer medical devices for Californians. DEHP, a harmful chemical, has been linked to numerous adverse health effects, particularly impacting vulnerable patients undergoing critical treatments.
"As someone who has battled cancer firsthand, I know how vital it is that our medical devices are safe and free from harmful chemicals like DEHP," said Assemblywoman Lori D. Wilson. "With the passage of AB 2300, California is taking a bold step to protect patients from toxic chemicals, ensuring that every individual undergoing medical treatment receives the safest possible care. I am deeply grateful to Governor Newsom for signing this critical legislation into law, reaffirming California’s leadership in protecting public health and setting a new standard for medical device safety across the nation."
The bill, sponsored by Breast Cancer Prevention Partners and California Black Health Network, represents a historic moment for patient safety in California and establishes a national precedent for medical device safety.
“Research shows that DEHP leaches out of IV bags and tubing into the medicine being transfused into sick patients, weakening the ability of chemotherapies to fight breast cancer and contributing to higher rates of breast cancer recurrence and mortality," said Janet Nudelman, Senior Director of Program and Policy at Breast Cancer Prevention Partners. "AB 2300 will finally put an end to this travesty. Thank you, Assemblywoman Wilson, for authoring this historic, first-ever legislation which will set a much-needed, higher bar for patient safety in California and beyond.”
>California continues to lead the nation in prioritizing public health and environmental protections, with AB 2300 representing a vital victory in ensuring safer, toxin-free medical devices. The law underscores Assemblywoman Wilson's ongoing commitment to health equity and patient safety, ensuring that all Californians can access medical treatments free from harmful chemicals.
