Statement from Assemblywoman Lori D. Wilson on Reports of Deportation Flights from Travis Air Force Base

For immediate release:

I believe every single person should be treated with dignity and respect. I find it deeply unsettling that Travis Air Force Base, located in the heart of our community, is being used for deportation flights.. As someone who is a part of the military community and has lived on base, I know firsthand the dedication and integrity of the men and women of Travis AFB. This action is not reflective of them or the critical work they do in service to our country.  Families are living in terror as they are being torn apart, lives are being upended, and a place meant for service and protection is being used in a way that does not reflect its true mission. This is a dark moment in our Country, and we cannot be silent.

The current administration’s immigration policies continue to sow fear and division, targeting vulnerable families who have built their lives here. These are our neighbors, our friends—they contribute to our community in countless ways. Our district and the people who live in it deserve to feel safe, not terrorized. While it is important to prevent illegal entry into our country and deport those committing crimes, there is a way to do this while treating people with dignity and respect.  Numerous news reports have highlighted the deplorable conditions faced by deportees, which is unacceptable. We can do better than this. Additionally, there are reports of the high costs associated with using our military for these operations, which diverts them from critical missions. We owe it to every taxpayer to use our resources wisely to ensure safety both domestically and abroad.

We must advocate for compassion, justice, and the fundamental belief that all people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Now is the time to reject policies rooted in cruelty and to fight for a future where every person can live with security, hope, and opportunity.
